The purpose of any education system is not only to foster academic learning but also all round development of children. Besides cognitive development, schooling also involves appropriate socio-affective development (i.e., self-reliance, self-discipline, taking initiative, independence of thought, understanding relationships with people and environment, responsible action, etc.). Development of such personal-social qualities includes knowledge and understanding, abilities and skills in relation to oneself and others. The school, besides the family, is a major influence in children’s personal-social development. Education aims at promoting optimum development of students in all spheres –educational, vocational, personal, social, moral, physical etc. so as to make them productive and useful citizens.
Young children deserve an enthusiastic start in life and they need quality early experiences, especially in the ages between 3-8 years so that they grow, learn, develop and flourish fully. Researches also suggest that the quality of early years learning experiences has significant impact on school adjustments and the learning levels of children in later schooling.
The first 8 years of a child’s life are known as formative years which are recognized as remarkable time for brain growth and development. Recent neuroscience researches, particularly on brain confirm the importance of early years in a child’s life. It shows that within the span of the early childhood years, there are certain ‘critical periods’ for development of significant cognitive, linguistic, social and psychomotor competencies, which are known to contribute to later success in life. This stage is also important as a foundation for the inculcation of social values and personal habits. Therefore, it is crucial to invest in these early years through ensuring an enabling environment for every child, which is not only the right of every child but also a way to make sure the sound foundation for life.
Benefits of NCERT Guidelines in Pre-school
- NCERT has decided to implement a new model of education in preschool as the current system is not helping to develop their mental skills.
- Involvement of parents, directing them to ensure that they talk to their child (conversation) and family time is given at home for the development of the child.
- Children need to be “heard” even at home to ensure their mental development.
- The curriculum states that with the help of parents, teachers can understand the interests and strengths of the students and find out how their learning is being mediated at home.
- These guidelines aim in teaching children hygiene, self-awareness and creative self -expression. By the second year of pre-school, kids will be made aware of “bad touch, which is the need of the hour.
- The curriculum developed by the NCERT aims at the two years i.e. LKG and UKG-level and wants to promote physical well-being, creative and motor development and cognitive development. It has also stressed on the importance of ‘family involvement’ at home and at preschool.
- This Curriculum encourages gender equality and states that pre-school should be a platform to break gender stereotype, which means equal education for all.
To help our children and the future generation to get the right kind of education in their early years and become successful in their future, we have taken this initiative to promote & present these NCERT guidelines to preschools. Our goal is to reach as many preschools as possible in the coming year and ensure that all preschools benefit from these guidelines and teachers get certified in our program.
